King Lear is the story of an aging British king who decides to abdicate his throne and divide his kingdom among his three daughters, Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. He asks them to declare how much they love him; the two elder daughters give flattering speeches, while the youngest, Cordelia, honestly states her love is between words and deeds, which infuriates Lear. Lear disinherits and banishes Cordelia, dividing his kingdom between Goneril and Regan, only to be driven out by them later. The play follows his descent into madness as he wanders in a storm, accompanied by his Fool and a loyal disguised servant. Ultimately, a desperate Lear dies of grief after Cordelia is executed, a tragic end to the play where most of the central characters perish
